Digital Photo Frame – When I visit the Assisted Living Facilities and get a chance to see the resident’s homes one of the things I see all the time is a Digital Photo Frame.

The other day I had a conversation with a dear friend of mine, Rose, from Assisted Living Made Simple.

You see Rose, helps families find their loved ones forever homes whether that be in assisted living, independent living, or even a dementia care facility. But Rose goes above and beyond and will help your loved one even after she has found them that perfect place.

She was telling me about helping one of the elderly residents in an assisted living facility set up Alexa on her Amazon Dot and how these little devices can help seniors so much in their everyday life.

When she started naming off all the benefits the Amazon Echo brings to seniors, it blew my mind.

Why in the world did I wait so long to get one of these?

You see, if I’m being honest with you, I never wanted one of these devices in my house because I know big brother is listening in on the conversations. Not that I have anything to hide but, your home is your one place of refuge, the one place you should be able to speak freely and I just didn’t feel comfortable with everything I was reading and hearing about it.

However, in researching the Amazon Echo, I did find out how you can turn Alexa off from listening in as well as hide the camera from her.

What is Alexa and what are some of the things can she do?

Let’s see if I can explain Alexa in non-techy terminology for you. 😉

Alexa is the name of the computerized voice that Amazon uses for its products such as the Amazon Echo answers questions you ask it or helps you fulfill the task you give her.

Well, almost any task you give her. 😉

She is basically like a virtual assistant, except, well she is a computer program so she can’t clean your house or cook for you.

But she can find you the best cleaning supplies and delicious recipes if you ask her too. 😉

Just be sure to call her Alexa and not some of the other names that people come up with. Names like Alexis, Alexander, Alysa, Amanda, Allegra, and many other names you’ll find in this video titled SNL Alexa for Seniors.

When it comes to what Alexa can do, boy does she have some skills.

No, I mean it. Amazon actually calls the things that Alexa can do, skills. Skills are voice-driven Alexa capabilities. You can add Alexa skills to your Echo to bring products and services to life. They would be what we call apps on our phones and tablets.

These Amazon Skills allow you to:

• Check your Bank Account
• Check Stock Prices
• Create To-Do Lists
• Control your television with voice activation
• Get Meal Idea
• Order Pizza from Dominos or Pizza Hut
• Find out what wines pair well with what food (yep, even this)

The list of Alexa Skills is growing by the day and will do nothing but continue to grow.

According to statista.com:

Growth of Amazon Alexa skills from 2016 to 2019. In a little over three years, Amazon’s Alexa has gone from having 130 skills to over 100,000 skills as of September 2019

One of the other great things about Alexa is…she’s FREE. There are no monthly fees whatsoever to use Alexa and her skills.

So how can this little device help our elderly loved ones stay connected, combat loneliness, and help them have a more fulfilling life?

15 Ways Alexa can help the elderly (speaking to the kids here)

1. Reminds them to take their medicine – this is so important, especially for those that are staying in place in their own homes. 
2. Wakes them up – I heard a gentlemen say that the best thing about Alexa is she wakes him up in the morning. 🙂
3. Plays music for them – this right here is one of the best things ever. To be able to ask Alexa to play the music from their era wakes the brain up, brings back fond memories, and allows them the opportunity to go back in time…if only for a song. 
4. Listen to talk radio – this is going to be my Dad. If your parents or grandparents love talk radio then all they have to do is ask Alexa to play it for them. 
5. Tells them jokes – for those that may be at home alone all day, a good joke can get them laughing and we know that laughter is good for the soul. 
6. Finds local events and will schedule them for it – this one is pretty cool. If your loved one is still getting around and loves to explore local places and events, they can ask Alexa to find these events and fill out the form for them. All hands-free!
7. Calls their loved one – no more having to find their phone to call you. They just have to tell Alexa to call and she’ll do it for them. This is so important especially if your loved one takes a fall and can’t get to their phone. They can at least call someone for help. 
8. Makes list – groceries, to-do list, etc.
9. Checks the weather for them – not only can they check the local weather but they also love checking the weather where their children and grandchildren live. 
10. Turn their lights off and on – this only works if they have other smart house items but this is great for those late-night trips to the bathroom. 
11. Can make video calls for them – only if you have the Amazon Echo Show
12. Allows loved ones to check in on them – not gonna lie, this one is kinda creepy but I guess creepy in a good way. Drop-in is the skill that allows you to drop in on your loved one to see how they are doing. 
13. Reminds them of upcoming Doctor appointments – when they can’t keep up with their doctor’s appointments and neither can you, Alexa to the rescue for you both. 
14. Find’s their phones – you don’t even have to be elderly for this one to be a huge benefit. lol
15. Acts as an intercom system – are you the primary caregiver for your loved one and living with them? Then this is perfect for you and them. As long as you have an Amazon Echo in each room they can use it to get a hold of you from another room. This could be a good thing or a bad thing though. lol

Which Alexa is best for seniors?

When choosing the perfect Amazon Echo device, you’ll want to answer some questions first.

• Is video calling a high priority? – If so, then you’ll want the Amazon Echo Show for sure.
• Do they want to watch videos, movies, news, or look at their calendar? If so, then the Echo Show will allow them to do all that.
• Does the senior have a hard time seeing?  – If they do and want to watch all the movies and have video calls then I suggest the Echo Show 10.1″ screen.
• Do they have a hard time hearing? If they do then you want to stay away from the Echo Dot as the other Echo’s have a better speaker and sound system. 
• What sort of skills will they be using? If the skills require them to view anything then be sure to get the Echo Show.

Be sure to really think about how this little device can help your loved one and then make an informed decision when purchasing it.

It’s the ultimate love story and one that reveals what Dementia and Alzheimers does to a person and their loved ones.

Below is the scene I’m talking about though.

UGH! That scene gets me every time.

You might be wondering what a movie has to do with a music player for elderly. Just keep reading and you’ll understand…I promise!

Well, it just so happened that I had an opportunity to be with a very dear friend of mine when she had to place her Godmother in a different Assisted Living Facility.

While at the new home, there was another resident that had this radio her son bought her that was programed with her favorite music on it.

Her son was showing us how all his mom had to do was lift the lid to start playing it and close the lid to shut it off. He told us that he was able to control the volume and set it at just the right place, plus it had one button that she could push to change the genre of music.

He proceede to lift the lid and the music begins to play.

Oh the look on his mom’s face! PRICELESS!

Her face lit up, her eyes came to life and she was in the moment. I felt so bad when he closed the lid but he wanted to show us how the music stopped but when he opened it again the music began playing at the very spot it had stopped.

He explained that all he did was use a USB cable and downloaded her favorite music onto this radio and now all she has to do is lift the lid to be transported back in time.

Working with the elderly and teaching them how to use all this new technology and Social Media sites, I see first hand the fear and frustration they have. But with this little player that can play the genre of music for those elderly that may be experiencing memory loss is heartwarming and exciting.

For me, I came right home and started researching these radios. I also called my Dad and asked him if he had seen one and he had not. He did however, put something like this together for one of the residents in the Retirment Home he lives at but it was through YouTube.

When you put a screen protector over your screen you’re protecting it from shattering in a million little pieces if you were to drop it.

I live down here in Florida where hurricanes are a big concern during the summer months. To protect some of the windows in our home we will use tape on them so that if they were to get blown out they will not shatter all over the place.

A screen protector for your tablet will work the same way. Of course, just like anything else, all screen protectors are not the same.

I actually spent a little bit more money on my screen protectors because I have Grand-babies that love playing with Grandma’s iPad and I need a tough screen protector for that.

Cases for your Tablet

I feel like a case works in tandem with the screen protector because having both you are doubly (is that even a word? lol) protected.

For instance, if I was to have a case on my tablet and I dropped it in such a way that it hit the screen, my screen would shatter in a million pieces but if I had the screen protector on it then the screen would have survived.

Then of course if I only had the screen protector on it and dropped it, the screen may be fine but what if I now have a huge dent in my tablet.

For me, I sometimes have a hard time tapping on the screen and choosing something because it’s so small and my finger is too big. I usually end up opening an app or another page that I didn’t want to and will get frustrated.

I use my tablet A LOT in the kitchen. If I find a recipe on Pinterest or AllRecipes.com I have it saved and will whip up that recipe in the kitchen.

Even though my case allows me to prop it up sometimes when moving it around it will fall over and, of course, my hands are covered in stuff so I can’t stand it back up.

These stands are honestly ingenious.

All I do is put my tablet on the stand and move it around the kitchen with me as I’m cooking and it always stays in the same position and I don’t have to worry about it falling over.

It reminds me of those recipe holders you use in the kitchen for the recipes you have on paper except now with all this wonderful technology the holder has become bigger.

Whether you like the earpieces that go over your ear or inside your ear they are WONDERFUL for drowning out the kids crying, the phone ringing, the teens complaining, the news lying, the dog barking, the… hey I think I just came up with a new song. lol

When you need to just relax or get away from what’s going on around you, you can put these on or in your ear and just let it go.

I just happen to have both.

While I’m driving around, running/exercising or in the house and speaking to someone on the phone I love to have my earbuds in my ears.

Now, when I listen to my Praise and Worship music I have the earphones that go over your ears because that seems to consume my ear where I feel like nothing can get in.

Bluetooth Speakers

For those moments you can’t or don’t want to have the earphones/earbuds on and you want to share what you’re listening to with others around you…there are the Bluetooth Speakers.

I bought a Bluetooth speaker about a year ago and it’s now been confiscated by my kids for around the pool. I think speakers are in order for their birthdays next year.

These Bluetooth speakers are wireless and will allow you to play music, have your tablet read a book or newspaper to you or if you’re watching a movie but moving around the house you can hear it play over the speaker.

Some of these Bluetooth speakers are no joke when it comes to the sound!

The sound coming from some of them is amazing and will probably make the neighbors call noise control on you if you really crank it up.

What is a Stylus Pen for Touch Screen Devices?

I could give you the technical definition of a stylus pen but I think it’s best if I put it in my own words. A Stylus Pen works by touch or pressure, rather than actual ink and is an instrument that allows me to precisely tap on my screen to make my tablet or smartphone complete a task I want it to do. For instance, if I wanted to select my Facebook app the stylus pen allows me to do so without accidentally opening another app by touching on it. It also gives me the ability to write or draw on my touchscreen using apps that will turn your iPad into a really cool drawing tablet.

Stylus Pen’s work on all sorts of devices like the iPad, iPhone, Android and Samsung and will work on e-Readers like the Kindle and Nook.

Your Need for a Stylus is Greater Than You Think

If you suffer from:

• Eye-hand coordination that isn’t what it use to be
• Arthritis
• Fat fingers
• Neuropathy
• Decreased dexterity
• The effects of a Stroke or anything else that may hinder you from using your fingertips to touch the screen.
